The European Commission accuses the company of unfairly tying its online advertising service to the Facebook social network.
Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. is facing antitrust allegations from the European Union for allegedly distorting competition by tying its online classifieds service to its social network.
The European Commission, the bloc’s antitrust regulator, said in a statement on Monday that the U.S. tech company automatically gives Facebook users access to its Marketplace service, potentially pushing competitors out of the market. The Commission also said it is concerned that Meta imposes unfair trading conditions on competitors in the online advertising services sector through its terms of service.
Meta will have the opportunity to present its defense before the Commission reaches a final decision. If the Commission concludes that the company has violated antitrust rules, Meta could face fines of up to 10% of its global annual revenue.
